Senior School Print E-mail
Senior Prep takes full advantage of the fact that Kelvinside Academy is a single site, all-through school. The Senior Prep year offers a very special introduction to Senior School, whether the boys and girls are progressing from Junior School or joining the school from outwith.

The Senior Prep year offers the ideal transition from Primary to Secondary education. Socially, Senior Prep is in the Senior School - long trousers not short, skirts rather than pinafores! However the pupils have their own classroom and primary trained teacher for the core subjects of English, Maths, Computing, History & Geography.

For the remaining time the children, as they will do in Senior 1 and above, move from subject to subject and teacher to teacher: from Science to Modern Languages to Art and Music and so on. The Senior Prep year thus offers continuity from the Junior school experience together with a challenging introduction to Senior School teaching and learning.

The aim of the curriculum in Senior 1 and 2 is to build upon the Senior Prep experience in providing a broad-based academic education so that each pupil may define his or her strengths and interests before proceeding to external examination courses.
Senior Pupils Studying
With classes of no more than 20, our boys and girls have a level of individual attention designed to provide challenge and support in all aspects of their study. In Senior 3 and 4, pupils undertake eight courses leading to either Standard Grade or Intermediate 2 Level Certification. In each subject the particular course has been selected to provide the best possible preparation for Higher courses in Senior 5 and 6.

All pupils must take English, Mathematics, Computer Studies, a Modern Language and a Science. Selection of the additional three subjects offers an element of choice, the key consideration being to ensure a balanced curriculum, whilst recognising particular aptitudes and interests.

In Senior 5, five Highers are the norm. It is also possible to undertake a mixed diet of Higher and Intermediate 2 courses in Senior 5 deferring study at Higher level in certain subjects until Senior 6. In the 6th year, each pupil's curriculum is designed specifically for his or her individual needs and interests. Advanced Higher Courses are offered where numbers are viable, and these may be combined with further Highers.

However, boys and girls who embark upon the 6th Year can expect to undergo a range of additional experiences designed to prepare them for the world beyond school. These include Service options, Enterprise education and extensive opportunities for leadership.

Intermediate 2 courses in Senior 5 deferring study at Higher level in certain subjects until Senior 6. In the 6th year, each pupil's curriculum is designed specifically for his or her individual needs and interests.
