Music, Art and Drama are central to the all-round education offered by the school. They are included in the curriculum of the Junior School and Music and Art are available within the subject options at Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher. Dance classes are available as an extra-curricular option. Within this creative environment, pupils can participate in a wide range of musical activities. The School currently has four choirs, an orchestra, a wind band, a flute ensemble, a pipe band and other smaller ensemble groups. As well as the hugely popular inter-house music competition, there are annual adjudicated competitions in both Junior and Senior Schools. Pupils enter music festivals, take part in workshops, perform in stage musicals and the West of Scotland Independent Schools' Orchestra. The lively and innovative Department of Art & Design offers an extensive range of media and encourages boys and girls to compete and exhibit outside the school, in addition to examination and portfolio work. There is an impressive list of recent prize-winners in national competitions, and an annual calendar is produced depicting pupils' work. Drama thrives both within and outwith the formal curriculum: large and small scale productions of the very highest standard are regular features of the school year and provide memorable and enriching experiences both for the pupils and staff involved and for the audiences which support them. Productions in recent years have included Oh What a Lovely War, King Lear, Guys and Dolls. The school has also participated in a UK wide Drama competition run by the National Theatre. A visiting Speech and Drama Teacher provides training and certification in a range of activities. The School's commitment to the Expressive Arts is reflected in the recent provision of a new suite of Art rooms and firm plans for a new theatre and music studio. |
