During the summer, 45 cadets attended the centralised camp at Barry Buddon Training Area which included a two day adventure training package at Victoria Barracks in Ballater. The seniors set an example in their conduct and enthusiasm at the very start, keen to win the 'Best Contingent' trophy at the end of the week and their efforts were awarded when Colonel Ross presented RSM Stuart Dougal with shield at the final parade.
The cadets took part in military skills including, skinning rabbits at the survival stand, undertaking patrols, setting up a harbour area and conducting a section attack on enemy positions manned by the Glasgow & Strathclyde University OTC. The highlight for a group of seniors was the 'night ambush' which was led by a South African marine who led 16 cadets on an hour long patrol into the ambush site - a fixed position on a hill. It was a spectacular ambush and well executed.
As well as kayaking and canoeing on Aboyne loch and hillwalking in the Cairngorms the cadets took part in activities with the Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery and Regular Infantry soldiers. At the end of the week we held a final evening parade on the main square. This was an ideal time to say farewell to our seniors and welcome the new Cadet SNCO's. So RSM Stuart Dougal presented his pace stick to 2009-2010 RSM Jamie Brechin before marching an emotional 6th year off the square.
