Both Junior and Senior schools took to the pitches in aid of Sport Relief on Friday 23 March. Junior school pupils and staff were mostly going for the mile sprint and many happily completed 2 miles in their allocated time! The Senior students were very colourful and innovative...we had rugby teams tied together attempting an eight legged mile, loads of space hoppers, pogo sticks, leap frogging, pacman followed by his ghosts, a turbo charged spartan warrior (Dennis Harrison!), blindfolded pupils, the list goes on…..
Sports relief funds this year are concentrating on providing clean water supplies abroad as well as some projects closer to home!

The 2010-2011 team was very successful, so this year's side anticipated a tough game. It turned out to be a thrilling and close encounter in which the passing and movement were of the highest order. The Academical side had a strong spine with three international players in the team. An excellent goal from Rose Fyfe in the first half was followed by a sharply taken penalty corner, the ball being slipped left when the defence was drawn right and Kathryn Kerr finishing well. However, KA increasingly dominated possession in the second half. Eilidh MacLeod, Heather Holloway and Carla Codona defended superbly, while the midfield of Victoria Craig, Laura Cooper and Bekki Gillespie drove upfield and found the forwards with telling passes. When Laura Cooper took the ball into the D and passed across goal, Eilidh Main was perfectly positioned to slot home. A very good save from Amy Liu in goal kept out a well struck shot by KA at the final penalty corner.

A glorious spring morning and a busy sideline at Balgray made for the perfect setting for the KA 1st XV to play its last match of the year against the Academicals. The match against the Academicals was the usual feisty encounter featuring some of the biggest hits of the season. The Academicals had points to prove and scores to settle, especially due to the fraternal rivalry between 3 sets of brothers – which certainly added spice to the occasion. In the end the 1st XV’s superior fitness and organisation wore down the very physical Academicals and the school ran out clear winners 34-7.
A score of 10-7 at the end of the first half is a testament to the aggression and determination displayed by both sides. Callum Brooker scored the first 2 tries. Ross Cowan putting in a very professional looking grubber kick and Callum Brooker showed great pace to beat the Academical winger to touch the ball down for the first try. However, Ross MacFarlane (former rugby captain) was able to capitalise on a loose ball in one of the Academicals’ few forays into 1st XV territory to get the FPs on the scoreboard.
The school dominated the second half, with Fraser Hastie barging over the line from short range after taking a quick penalty – which set the momentum for the half. Unfortunately for Ben Frame, however, a severely injured Achilles put an end to a well played game for the school scrum half. The school scored a further 2 tries, and then late in the game Cameron Mackay (school stand-off) intercepted a pass well inside the school half and ran half the pitch before executing a good pass to Ross Cowan who ran in for the final try of the match. The final 2 tries were converted by Harry Dickie and Fraser Hastie from 25m – not the norm from the 2 back-rowers.
A good send-off for Mr Leighton in his final match as coach for the Kelvinside Academy 1st XV, capping a successful season where we have won 12 out of 18 matches. We thank him for all that he has done for our team this year and wish him well in his new post at the High School of Glasgow.

S5 pupil Emma Steeples represented Great Britain Schools in an international schools competition in Germany last week. Competing in Dortmund against over a dozen teams from all over Europe, and even the USA, Emma shot a personal best competition score of 570 from a total of 600, finishing 4th in the British Schools rankings. Emma was the highest placed British Schools girl.
Having flown back to this country, Emma was straight back into competition representing Scotland against New Zealand. Emma took up shooting just over two years ago under the instruction of KA's Mr Charles Young, so everyone at school is thrilled by Emma's oustanding achievement!
