The excellence of the outdoor pursuits and adventurous activities programme at Kelvinside Academy was recognised this week by a prestigious award. The school’s expedition to Corsica last summer was the best Combined Cadet Force Expedition from the United Kingdom in 2011.
Eight students trekked the GR20 route, a distance of 190 kilometres with a total ascent of 15,000 metres and knee crumbling descents across the spine of Corsica. Conquering Monte Cinto, the highest summit on the island, was the highpoint of the trip in more ways than one. Laura Cooper, 16, described the expedition as the best month of her life: “I have developed more muscle, I feel mentally stronger and more self-assured.” The Ulysses Trust, which made the Award, said of the expedition: “Taking into account the challenges posed by each expedition, the benefits derived, and the quality of the reports submitted, the Kelvinside Academy Corsica expedition was considered by the Trustees to be the best cadet expedition of the year.” The Rector, Robert Karling, congratulated members of the expedition on being the best in the country: “This award is highly deserved. The school has a fantastic outdoor pursuits programme that gives young people superb opportunities for challenge and team work.”

This summer a party of eight cadets at Kelvinside Academy will attempt the 3 Peaks Challenge, completing ascents of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales, within 24 hours.

Members of the Junior and Intermediate Choir were out of school performing in a concert in Cairn's Church, Milngavie at the weekend. Singing a medley from the show "Mary Poppins" as part of the Spring Concert by the Kelvin Choir they were given a warm welcome from a very appreciative audience.

The KA football team had two brilliant wins against local school Broomhill Primary. The B team played first and fought back from being one goal down after half time. The final score was a 3-1 victory to KA. Goals were scored by Blair Hastie (J6) and 2 from Craig MacFarlane (SP). The Man of the Match accolade went to Griff Cleary (SP). The A team also won 3-1 with fantastic goals from Hardie Brown (SP). The A team game was a fast paced and high tempo with excellent team work displayed by KA. This was definitely their best performance so far. Man of the Match Hardie Brown (SP).
Well done to both teams!

This year we decided to visit the warmer climes of Andalusia in the south of Spain. There is an abundance of wonderful places to visit and enjoy and we were planning to see as much as we could as well as attend Spanish classes in Benalmadena. It was a real pleasure to feel the warm evening air as we arrived at our sea front hotel in Torremolinos. We were able to enjoy a brisk walk along the sea front and listen to the waves breaking of the beach just out of sight in the inky darkness of the evening.
We attended our Spanish classes early on the Friday morning and although initially slightly overawed by the Spanish speaking tutors, we overcame our shyness and enjoyed a taste of school in Spain. On the return journey to the hotel we had plenty of time to have our lunch, another opportunity to speak Spanish and also to have a quick look round the shops. Everywhere we went, we could smell the intoxicating scent of the orange blossom because there were trees lining the streets and to be found all along the promenade. We found a small arcade with shops and cafes on the sea front and we walked along every evening to enjoy the quiet night life and each others’ company.
The following day we were heading off to Seville and to the theme park ‘La Isla Magica’. The journey took us through some typical Andalusia countryside with lots of olive trees and farms. It was a long but fun day for us all. The following day it was up and away to Granada – another beautiful city of the region. We enjoyed a tour of the city on an open topped bus and watched the colourful processions walking through the streets celebrating Palm Sunday. The Alhambra remains an enigmatic example of the complicated religious history in Spain and is a magnet for tourists from all parts of the world.
A last visit to the Spanish school on the last morning was really entertaining and gave all of us the opportunity to practise our Spanish and have a great time. Fortunately we had time to enjoy the swimming pool – even if the water was rather cool and we enjoyed being outdoors and mostly being together. It is just a pity that we couldn’t have stayed for longer! Many thanks to Ms Preston, Mr Reid and Mrs Mullan for taking the time to do this for us.

Junior 6 pupils certainly have a taste for adventure. After acting out
life on the high seas for their drama production, Treasure Island, it
was back to dry land and the challenges of the Cairngorm National Park
in the Highlands for a week of outdoor activities at the end of April.
Ignoring wind, rain and even a touch of snow, the children enjoyed
climbing, abseiling and orienteering at the Abernethy Nethybridge
Adventure Centre. Zooming down the hillside on a gigantic Zip Wire was a
particular highlight, as was the ever-popular Raft Building Team
Challenge. Not all boats stayed afloat, but since it was fairly wet on
land anyway no-one seemed to mind an extra soaking.
The children all agreed that the experience helped them to develop strengths in team-working, communication and resilience.
