We have had a science month, carrying out various investigations on sound and forces.

“Ella’s Wobble” an interactive science workshop on sound gave us lots of exciting ideas. We made different kinds of instruments, which were played in different ways. They helped us to tell the story of Ella who lost her wobble.

It was great fun hearing the echoes inside the buckets.  Some of the instruments we made had very funny sounds!

We explored lots of forces too. We found out which surfaces made cars move fast and slow.

We moved different objects with wind and water.

It was great fun using the water siphons to move the ball.

The older children in Junior School made some boats and we tested them out in our water tray. We then tried to make some boats of our own that floated.

We also found out lots about our senses and our bodies. We borrowed some real bones from the senior school and tried to work out which part of the body they came from.

The Easter bunny came to help us celebrate. We decorated boiled eggs to roll down the hill in an egg race and hunted for some chocolate eggs in the garden – some were hidden in very tricky places!

A very busy time indeed!

Junior Start have been finding out about Robert Burns and Chinese New Year. We have also been reading ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson and making ‘all things Gruffalo!’

On Robert Burn’s birthday we tried Scottish dancing to some lively ceilidh music. We also tasted some Scottish favourites such as oatcakes and cheese, shortbread and even haggis.

Since it’s the Year of the Dragon we have been making dragons, dragon masks, Chinese kites and cards, all coloured red and gold for good luck.

The Gruffalo has been a great favourite with everyone, staff included. The children know the words off by heart and they proved this in the very successful production of ‘The Gruffalo Show’. They designed costumes and made the woods themselves.

With an interest in animals we took the children on safari at the Kelvingrove Museum. We found out where animals live, what they like to eat and some of their special features. On St Andrew’s Day we made Scottish flags, found out about who Andrew was, made porridge and tasted some other Scottish foods. We also danced to some ceilidh music.

We practised really hard for our Christmas show, The Sleepy Shepherd, and it was fantastic. We enjoyed performing so much that we went up to Balmanno House and did a special show for the residents. They loved it! Zoolab UK came to visit to do a special nativity show with us. We got to handle some of the animals that would have been in and around the stable in Bethlehem. The children had lots to tell our visitor about the Christmas story! Santa found time out of his busy schedule to come and see us at our Christmas party, which was great!

Autumn Term In Junior Start Print E-mail
Friday, 27 January 2012
We started off this term by hunting for lots of autumn things around the nursery garden. We then held a pink day where all the children could wear anything pink. The children had fun making lots of pink cakes and icing biscuits for their parents to buy. We managed to raise £65.60 for Breast Cancer.

At Halloween the children had great fun dressing up in all kinds of costumes, dooking for apples and playing spooky games. Some of the children visited Yorkhill Hospital to hand over a cheque for £161, which was raised after selling raffle tickets. Finally, the children met a recycling superhero – Bag Girl. She told them all about rubbish monsters and how to defeat them by recycling more. What a busy term!

Junior Start's half-term highlight was a visit to the Puppet Theatre.  The children learned how puppets are made and used, before taking the opportunity to make some puppets of their own.

Junior Start began the term doing different activities about their favourite stories.  The three bears finished their porridge with enough room left for Goldilocks!
