Junior School Print E-mail
The Junior School is housed in the main building, sharing many facilities with the Senior School: the sports hall and gymnasium as well as the Computing, Art and Music suites and the fully equipped Library with internet links run by our qualified librarian.

Classes are small (about 20 children) and classrooms are bright and stimulating places, where all our boys and girls want to give of their best.

The majority of the Junior 1 intake is drawn from Junior Start. There are two classes at each stage from Junior 1 to 6, then pupils continue to Senior Prep, in transition to Senior School. Junior School Pupils

The curriculum follows the National guidelines, 5 - 14, in all areas, but we stress the need for a sound foundation in Language and Mathematics. All children are encouraged to develop a love for the written word and have frequent access to the library. Regular homework is set at all stages.

Learning support is available to give specialist help to any child who is experiencing difficulties or may be capable of accelerated learning. Specialist teachers contribute to the children's learning from Junior 1.

The teaching of a modern foreign language begins in Junior 1, together with regular Physical Education, Art & Craft, and Music lessons. From Junior 4 a games programme is introduced; from Junior 5, Saturday morning inter-school fixtures.

Home/school links have a high priority. Parents are kept closely informed of their child's progress. An 'Open Door' policy ensures parents with concerns are able to see the class teacher or the Head of the Junior School at relatively short notice.

Junior 1s to 3s have an activities afternoon, where they are introduced to a range of experiences with other children and teachers. They begin to make their own decisions about what they are interested in and where their talents lie.

Junior 4s to 6s can choose from a number of lunchtime clubs and after-school activities: dance, Aikido, short tennis, technology, ICT, drama, cross country, bridge are among those activities currently on offer.

Music features strongly here, with boys and girls encouraged to join the Infant or Junior choirs and the Junior Orchestra.

Many children learn musical instruments and may also take Speech and Drama lessons. At different times during the year there are music and drama productions for all pupils in Junior School allowing every child the opportunity to experience the excitement of performing on stage.

Charitable activities are an important part of school life. Pupils fundraise regularly for different charities at home and abroad.

We want your child to engage fully with this rich school experience, to be happy and busy, to grow in self-awareness and self-confidence, to be ready for the move into Senior Prep and, beyond that, into Senior School.
