On normal CCF afternoons, S3 cadets, through undertaking the Army Proficiency Certificate (APC), learn the rudiments of weapons handling and shooting, drill, map and compass navigation, fieldcraft, campcraft, self reliance and first aid. S4 cadets continue with advanced training through the Advanced APC syllabus, and specialise in infantry training. S5 cadets join the Methods of Instruction Technique (MOIT) Cadre and spend an intense year advancing their skills and learning how to become effective instructors. S6 Cadets use all of their experiences and organisational skills to deliver training packages to junior cadets. Thursday afternoon activities are complemented by a large number of training weekends and days throughout the year, including opportunities to shoot the Cadet GP rifle and put into practice skills learned in school.

Various locations are used including Garelochhead Training Camp, Barry Buddon Training Camp, Mugdock Country Park, Dechmont Ranges and Rothiemurchus Lodge. Annual Camp is always in the first week of the summer holidays; this tends to be well attended and provides a nice mixture of both military and adventurous training pursuits. After this a growing number of cadets opt to attend camps throughout the UK doing activities like Summer Mountain Proficiency, Caving and Kayaking. Cadets also attend the Frimley Park Leadership Course in Surrey and have the opportunity to spend the summer in Canada as part of a cadet exchange programme.
