Lord Rodger of Earlsferry (1961) (Class of 1962)
18.09.44 – 26.06.11

Lord RodgerWEB.jpg Alan Rodger was one of Scotland’s most eminent Judges and regarded as one of the finest legal minds of his generation. He held most of the senior posts in the Scottish legal system, serving as Lord Advocate, the Senior Law Officer of Scotland, before becoming Lord Justice General and Lord President of the Court of Session, the Head of the country’s judiciary. He was then appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary (Law Lord) in London, and became a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2009, when the judicial functions of the House of Lords were transferred to the new Court. Until his death, he was one of only two Scottish Justices of the Supreme Court.

Born in Glasgow on 18 September 1944 he left KA after his fifth year and graduated from Glasgow University with an MA and LLB (the last undergraduate to obtain a double first in Scots and Civil Law) before moving on to Oxford to study for a Doctorate in Philosophy (DPhil). He remained at Oxford as a junior research fellow at Balliol, and then as a fellow and tutor of New College from 1970. In 1972, however, he resigned his fellowship to join the Faculty of Advocates (an independent body of lawyers who practise as advocates before the courts of Scotland). In 1976 he became Clerk of Faculty, and took Silk in 1985.

Offices subsequently held:
1979 – Standing junior counsel to the Department of Trade
1981-84 – A member of the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland 1985 – Advocate Depute
1986-88 – Home Advocate Depute
1989-92 – Solicitor General for Scotland
1992 – Lord Advocate. Lord Rodger joined the Privy Council and was created a life peer as Baron Rodger of Earlsferry.
1995 – Senator of the College of Justice 1996 – Lord President of the Court of Session and Lord Justice General of Scotland, the head of the country's judiciary.
2001 – Lord of Appeal in Ordinary
2009 – Justice of the Supreme Court

Lord Rodger, who was suffering from a brain tumour, was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1991 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1992. From 2008 he was High Steward of the University of Oxford.

Alan is survived by his brother Ian C Rodger (1963) and sister Christine. Ian’s sons are David F Rodger (1994) and Alan Rodger (1995).

First Minister Alex Salmond said: "Lord Rodger made an outstanding contribution to public life in Scotland over many years both as a judge and as Lord Advocate. He was held in the highest regard by all those who worked with him in public service, and dedicated himself to the interests of justice during a long and hugely influential career."
