Class of 1951 & Class of 1961 Reunions

On Friday 7th October, 2011, Kelvinside Academy welcomed back some former pupils, with the classes of 1951 and 1961 returning for a reunion meal and drinks.

The free spirits of the 60s were delighted to revisit their former haunts, and to witness the changes and improvements made to the school.

Although the old gym brought back some memories, all the academicals commented on the progress made by the school, and delighted in the tours given by our current senior pupils.

Academicals from the Class of 1986 enjoyed reliving their school days when they attended their 25 year reunion on Friday 25th March.

It was a great day as Keith Kemsley commented "Many thanks to the staff and pupils for the kind hospitality on Friday. I can say without a doubt it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I do believe that the next one (30 years) will be even better supported and suspect there may be a few unofficial gatherings between now and then! There was a great buzz about the school and our 6th year hosts were a credit to Kelvinside"

Academicals from the Class of 1991 enjoyed a tour of the school and a tasty school lunch when they attended their 20 year reunion on Friday 18th March.

Callum McPhee wrote “Walking around the school again after twenty years and seeing a few old teachers has brought back some good memories. Also meeting the Rector and the sixth year pupils who escorted us around clearly showed me that the spirit and atmosphere within KA is excellent. It is nice to see the school in such a strong position and I wish KA continued success in the future.”

arran reunion.jpg 1939 Evacuees Reunion

Seventy years after their evacuation from Kelvinside Academy to Dougarie Lodge on the Isle of Arran at the outbreak of the Second World War on 3rd September 1939, a number of the evacuees and their spouses attended a reunion lunch on 3rd September 2009 in the Dougarie Boathouse and enjoyed a tour of Dougarie Lodge courtesy of the present owners, Stephen and Lavinia Gibbs.  They included Mr & Mrs Harry Abram (1941), Mr Ronald Brash (1942), Mr & Mrs Peter Cuthbertson (1942), Dr & Mrs Eric Gibson (1940), Dr & Mrs William Quaile (1940), Mr Ralph Risk (1950), Sir Robert & Lady Smith (1940) and Lord and Lady Weir (1944).

The following School representatives also attended: Mrs Lesley Douglas, Rector; Mr Ian Lindsay, Deputy Rector (retired); Katie Mullen, Head Girl; Andrew Pattie, Head Boy and Mrs Elaine Solman, Development Manager

Lord Weir (Bruce Weir), worked tirelessly over many months from his home in Lochgilphead to organise this most enjoyable and highly successful event.  A commemorative booklet was produced to mark the occasion and Ronald Brash's elegantly written memoir of those times helped to remind everyone of this unique chapter in the life of the School.

The Evacuees Book below shows photographs of the evacuees on Arran and in Tarbert.  This is a large document and may take some time to download.
