London Section Dinner
The Annual London Section Dinner was held on the 24th November once more in the pleasant surroundings of the Caledonian Club in Mayfair. The outgoing President, Murray Leslie (1985), welcomed our two guests Lesley Douglas, the Rector and Andrew Brodie, The President of the parent club. They gave an account of life in the school and the various activities of the Academical club respectively. Graham Dawson (1992) was the sole newcomer attending the dinner. It is good to see new faces at various events. Aidan Dow (1987) will be the president for the next two years with Gil Scott (1989) vice president. The evening was greatly enjoyed by all.

Professor Michael Pittilo, MBE (1972)
Mike Pittilo died suddenly at home on 16 February 2010 aged 55 as a result of renal cancer. He had been Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, since 2005. Professor John Harper, Acting Principal, said of Mike : "We've lost an inspirational leader who will be sadly missed not only for the direction he brought to the university but also the warm rapport he had with both staff and students. His legacy to the university will be that, during his five years as Principal, Robert Gordon University became recognised as the best modern university in the UK by the Times League Tables in both 2009 and 2010. He was very proud of this achievement." Mike, who studied Biology at the University of Strathclyde before embarking on his career in higher education, was the author of various publications on parasitology and atherosclerosis, escaped academia to enjoy hillwalking, photography and clay pigeon shooting, as well as music and cinema. He is survived by his wife , Dr. Carol Blow, a GP, and his mother Betsy and sister Fiona.
Dr D D Murray McGavin (1956) has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List 2010 for services to Eye Care in Developing Countries. Dr McGavin spent many years of his life treating eye problems and restoring sight in Afghanistan. He went on to publish Journals that have had a significant impact in raising the standards of eye care in developing countries and established Resource Centres for the Prevention of Blindness around the world.
Dr McGavin last visited the school in 2006, when he presented the prizes at the School Prize Giving in the Bute Hall, Glasgow University.
Kelvinside Academy takes this opportunity to congratulate him on his well deserved honour in recognition of his significant contribution to eye care.
Jim Taylor (1973) was present at the Scottish Rugby Union President's Reception when Richard Gray (2007) received his first cap.
Richie Gray Capped for Scotland
Congratulations to Richie Gray (2007) on the award of Scottish Caps in the 2010 RBS 6 Nations Championship matches against France at Murrayfield on 7th February, against Wales at the Millenium Stadium on 13th February and against Ireland at Croke Park on 20th March.
