Senior School

Kelvinside Academy is housed in a Grade A listed building close to the Botanic Gardens. Opened in 1878, the building has been extensively upgraded and modernised to ensure that pupils can learn in well-equipped classrooms while still being immersed in the sense of history and honour that the building represents.

Sixth Year Centre

The Sixth Year Centre is designed to prepare students for undergraduate study and university life. In addition to a common room and kitchen, the building includes a spacious study area and a seminar room. The facilities, including Wi-Fi throughout, are designed to encourage collaborative learning in small groups.

The Library

The Library is a peaceful, light and airy space ideal for personal study and quiet reading. It holds both fiction and non-fiction titles as well as a wide range of resources, newspapers and periodicals. A separate Junior Library offers a small, intimate space for group storytelling and encourages a love of books from the early years onwards.

Gilchrist Theatre

The 400 seat theatre lies in the heart of the main school building. Its technical facilities enhance the professional standards achieved by both cast and crew in our drama productions.

Science

The five laboratories are designed for the practical activities of a modern science education. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught together under one roof, with investigations and experiments at the core of the approach to understanding and explaining the universe.

The Mall

The Kennedy Mall is the social heart of the school, a focal point for pupils and parents as well as a gallery for the outstanding art and photography produced by our pupils.

Art and Music

The Expressive Arts Department radiates creativity.

Art and Design are accommodated in spacious studios which are fully equipped for painting and drawing, photography, textiles, jewellery, ceramics and sculpture.

The Music Department is a constant hive of activity, the classrooms and rehearsal rooms full of pupils singing, playing and composing.

Games Hall

A large, modern Sports Hall is used for both curricular PE and a range of extra-curricular activities. In addition, there is a well-equipped fitness suite which also includes a number of ergo machines used by our rowing squad. The shooting range also gives pupils a chance to excel to international level in this challenging sport.

Junior School

The Junior School is housed in the East Wing of the main school building. From an early age, our Junior School pupils feel at home in the Senior School and transition at P7 is seamless. All the classrooms are equipped with Interactive Smartboards and there is Wi-Fi throughout the building. Pupils access our Virtual Learning Environment using their personal tablets and laptops.

Social Studies and Modern Languages

The Social Studies Faculty and Modern Language classrooms are situated in the Mirrlees Drive building. The school’s largest faculty includes History, Geography, Modern Studies, Business Studies, Economics and Religious and Moral Philosophy. The building has Wi-Fi throughout and also houses our language and ICT labs.

Playing Fields

With the playing fields at the Balgray Campus only a short walk from the Main School Building, all children have access to outstanding facilities for rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis, football and athletics. Rugby and Hockey are the principal sports played in the Autumn and Spring Terms. A notable number of pupils gain regional and national honours in these sports.

The Stand

With space to accommodate over 350 spectators, the stand is where the Kelvinside Academy family gathers to support the 1st XV, cheer at Sports Day and show its pride at CCF Inspection.

The Pavilion

The floor to ceiling glass windows in the modern pavilion provide the perfect vantage point for enjoying a refreshment while watching a game of rugby or hockey. In addition to housing changing rooms, first aid room, conference and dining facilities for up to 100 guests, this light and spacious modern facility is used for dance and fitness and by many local groups.

Parking

Private off-street parking facilities provide safe drop off and collection for both nursery children and Junior and Senior School pupils.

Gartnavel General Hospital

The Nursery and Balgray Campus are situated on Great Western Road directly across from Gartnaval General Hospital. Vehicle access to the campus is via Chesterfield Avenue. Pedestrian access is via Leicester Avenue.

Hyndland Train station

Hyndland Train station is a 15 minute walk away.

Kelvinside Academy Bus

The school offers dedicated school bus services from Renfrewshire, the Northside and Southside of Glasgow. The Northside bus is a homeward only service from the school to Milngavie, Strathblane and Killearn. The Southside and Renfrewshire services are both inbound and homeward. The school Reception can provide all details, times and costs.

Walking Times

The Balgray Campus is just a 10 minute walk from the school. The route to Balgray ensures that pupils cross roads at designated pedestrian crossings.

Kirklee Road Junction

Kelvinside Academy is just 100 metres from the junction of Great Western Road and Kirklee Road.

Bus Stop

There are excellent transport links just a two minute walk from the school. Bus stops on either side of Great Western Road give access to services running in both directions. The regular services on these bus routes, going both north and south, include M11/4A, 6A, 6, 6B, 20/20A.

Hillhead Subway Station

Hillhead Subway Station is situated just a 10 minute walk from the school on Byres Road.

Glasgow Botanic Gardens

The school often takes advantage of its location next to the Botanic Gardens, where there are riverside woodland walks, formal flower beds, expansive lawns and exotic plant glasshouses. Whether visiting as part of an outdoor education lesson or keeping fit on a lunchtime run with the athletics club, the Gardens are a wonderful resource right on our doorstep.
