We encourage our students to take part in a wide range of sports and physical exercise, and a large number of pupils represent the school in teams. Rugby and Hockey are played throughout the Autumn and Spring terms. There are matches against other schools every Saturday morning and there are also a number of midweek fixtures and tournaments. Kelvinside players are regularly selected for regional and national selection and in recent years, rugby and hockey teams have toured in Holland, France and Italy. The main sports in the Summer Term are Cricket and Athletics.
The KA Shooting Club has seen great success over recent years with pupils representing 'Scottish Schools' and individual selection for Great Britain U21. Almost all of the club's shooting is formal small-bore shooting at 25 yards in the school range.
Training takes place on the River Clyde using the boats and facilities of the Glasgow Schools Boathouse. Through a generous donation, the school has two boats, a double and a four, and our students have enjoyed success in ‘Heads of the River’ and regattas from Glasgow to Inverness.
The curling teams meet on a Friday evening at Braehead Curling Rink from September until the end of March. Coaching sessions teach new curlers how to curl, be safe on the ice and the etiquette of the sport.
This activity runs on a Friday evening in the lighter months. In addition to riding, pupils learn grooming and stable management.
Handball is popular in Europe and demands speed of movement and co-ordination. Kelvinside Academy has won the Scottish Primary Schools Championship for two years and our Girls’ team are also Scottish champions.
